Mones💊
This is specifically for people living in the LA area, but please add
more resources in other cities since it would be much more useful to
trans folk to use.
If you are under 21: go to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)
Address:
5000 Sunset Blvd.
4th Floor of the Citibank Building
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Call to get on the waitlist 323-361-5372
You do not need
a letter for HRT nor insurance. If they ask you about this, tell them
that you do not have access to a therapist/counselor or professional.
(which is true for a lot of trans youth). You will have to fill out
paperwork if you do not have insurance and it asks for financial
information from your parents. Regardless, you will need your parents
permission and signatures before starting hormone replacement therapy.
There is a wait list and it can vary from a month to up to a year. (They are prioritizing younger patients.) They
used to accept patients under 25 but they cut it to 21 to make the wait
list shorter. If you are already a patient, they will provide health
care until you turn 25, at which time the hospital staff will help you transition into
another health care provider.
You will be assigned to either Dr. Johanna Olson, Dr. Marvin Belzer or someone trained by them. They have both been working with trans youth for a long time, still, they are both cis and might make transphobic/transmisogynistic comments.
The doctor will give you a physical exam on your first visit. They will give you the release forms and explain to you the consequences of starting HRT. On the second visit they will take blood samples to run blood tests and check your hormone levels prior to starting HRT. The doctors will give you their email and phone number so that you can contact them at anytime. Once the blood tests come back, they will contact you, or ask you to contact them in a week or so, I don’t remember. I am a trans girl so my doctor just asked me to give them my pharmacy’s number, name and address and they sent the prescription for my hormones the same day. (Feel free to bug them if there’s a problem).
CHLA funds a lot of their health care by their Angels of Change project, started by Bamby Salcedo.
Is there any place like this on the east coast? Specifically in Pennsylvania or New York?
we’ll do more research and get back to you!
